This is the best photo that I have seen of an Erie Railroad practice that was unique to the railroad and which can be used to identify the former Erie carbody units from the Lackawana carbody units after all were painted in the EL scheme. Some one in the Erie management decreed that there was a safety hazard when going between units when connected nose to nose. The spotting feature is the added steel plate extensions to the top of the anti-climber buffer area. The New York & Greenwood Lake Railroad or a previous owner has added the ditch lights below this plate but wisely kept the Erie feature intact, as it should be. Many thanks for this camera angle and for your posting of this photo Dennis.
