The machine that is enclosed by the chain link fencing is a wheel turning lathe, and is probably why the UP 844 drivers are here. Many railroads simply got rid of the machinery to repair steam locomotives at the same time they did away with the steam power. The ability to perform this kind of work is one of the ways that Strasburg is able to fund it's operations and restorations. If one looks carefully, one of the driver sets is mounted in the wheel turning lathe.

That is correct, one set is on the lathe, one is in front of 7312, one is visible behind the group on the tour and one is out of view between 7312 and the LIRR 4-6-0.
