At some point The Clinchfield bought a small number of six axle GE units which while good pullers, did cause the railroad some problems. The Clinchfield dieselized with General Motors Electromotive Division locomotives, and had bought nothing else. Their shop employees were very good at maintaining the EMD products, and the roads parts department was stocked with EMD parts. The new GE units simply did not do well when it came time to perform repair work, and required more time in the shop when parts were not on hand. After the trade the Clinchfield again was an all EMD railroad again. For those who model in HO. Atlas produced a Clinchfield model of the GE units, my sample of these is numbered 3604, which is the same number series as Tom's SD-45s in the above photo. Today lots of CSX GE products roam the former Clinchfield, but in the past that was just not the norm.
