I don't remember ever seeing switchers with the semi-ladder on top of the long hood, either. Very nice photo, Sid

Interestingly, the Union Railroad provided an elaborate arrangement for locomotive roof-top access (i.e., ladder and roof-top platform). Every locomotive visible in this image is provided with this arrangement of ladder/platform. Does anyone recall the reasoning for such an arrangement? Thanks for sharing this wonderful image Mr. Vaught.

I love the old sw1 hanging out of the roundhouse, I also noticed all their switchers have little catwalks on top of the cabs.

Notice the ladders to get onto the roof of the cab, and the running boards up there. I'd also say that they sealed the cab windows on 701C because it's in the steel industry?

I was more interested in the Buick and old style Chevy vans in the backround.

Please see Sid Vaught's other photo (Photo ID: 317071) for my explanation of the roof walks, which I remembered from an old issue of Extra 2000 South, diesel magazine. Hint: Increased sand capacity and easier access for employees.
