Nice angle, Nick. The joint bars that allow for a change in rail size are known as composition joint bars; or, comp joints for short. It's not uncommon to see smaller rail "comp up" to larger rail at a road crossing. There's a Mexican Restaurant on the opposite side of the locomotive who's back door clears a passing train by inches when it's opened.
