NOOOO! That's depressing. Looks like the 1755's bad luck rubbed off on the 1792. Like you, I enjoyed catching this loco whenever it came through Greensboro. One can hope she will be rebuilt, although there seems to be significant fire damage. Amazing the crew was OK, this is the reason we have widecabs!

Doesn't look like it will be rebuilt from the amount of damage and the age of the unit. Didnt know that it was the last GP40 on the NCDOT roster, here I was the day before talking about wanting to shoot one....
Glad the crew survived though, looked like a pretty nasty fire on top of the crash.

There should be a safer place for locomotive fuel tanks. Their close proximity to the ground and the engine mean that a seemingly harmless accident can have potentially dire consequences. The overall crashworthiness of the old EMD spartan cab is evident here.
