I guess its because the paint was fading, but I used to have to look closely at the logo on the N&W units to see if they were in fact or black, they were so dirty.

Great shot back into history, William! I remember seeing a lot of gold "dots" on many N&W engines from this period and I always wondered if the quality of the half-moon stickers wasn't as good as they should have been? I'm also guessing repeated trips through the wash rack were probably harder on them than sunlight and normal everyday wear? Thanks for sharing this classic!

N&W blue is associated with the ex-Wabash president Pevler but the scheme wasn't in use at the time of the merger with the Wabash. It was in use 1966-70.
