Wow...a steam locomotive and tender disguised as a two diesels! I guess this steam locomotive want-a-be would be a 0-4-4-0.

Peter said it best. I just don't get how diesel exhaust can look like that. I've only ever seen clear (with heat distortion) or black from soot.

My guess is either "wet stacking" from unburned fuel collecting after sitting at idle for some time, or some sort of coolant / water leak into the system. I can tell you it was an odor I have not smelled before.
