The U23s replaced RDS5s, which replaced FM H10/12s. SD38s replaced the U23s, CSX preferred SD40-2s, but now the hump is closed, and as soon as a certified contractor is available the hump will be levelled. The reason a specialist is required is sulphuric acid in the hump from cinders and unburned coal dust in the "contaminated" soil that New York Central used when the hump was built in 1956-7.
