According to the ever reliable (?) Wikipaedia article on Pacifics, the official (ie dynomometer) top speed for the 16E was 80mph -and unofficially over 90mph. SAR (now Transnet Freight Rail) main lines are laid to very high standards - they are not lightly used narrow guage lines running through remote countryside.
