The lead locomotive, 436, is actually an E9 as its 400-series number denotes, and it is the only piece of equipment Amtrak ever acquired from the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, as the two entities could not come to an agreement on the value of ICGs locomotives and rolling stock. I believe this locomotive came aboard as part of a settlement over Amtrak equipment destroyed in a wreck on the ICG at Tonti, IL in 1971. The first two cars in this train represent a former New Haven Baggage-Lounge and a L&N ACF-built coach, respectively.

Amtrak 436 is actually an E9, as its 400-series number denotes, and of ICG heritage, a fact betrayed by its uniquely visored marker lights. It also represents the only piece of Illinois Central Gulf equipment Amtrak ever acquired, since the two entities could not come to an agreement on the value of the ICG equipment. I believe this unit was acquired as part of a settlement involving Amtrak equipment destroyed in a wreck on the ICG at Tonti, IL in 1971.

Thanks for the great background on the unit. I did not know about the ICG situation. I followed up on your info and found that this was built as IC #4029, and is thus an E8 as labled (built in June 1952). At some point later, it was IC #2021.

Thank you Ray for allowing Charles to get such a greatly composed picture of Amtrak at Beacon.
