"I guess we may have seen it all now, lets hope this isn't the new trend." - Unless helicopter charter rates fall drastically, you have little to worry about as far as this becoming a trend. That being said, aerial shooting such as this is highly effective in certain situations but unless you've got $500 - $600 per hour to burn on charter fees it's beyond 99% of all railfans. I've done this on several occasions with great results. For those concerned about helicopter sights & sounds encroaching on their ground based efforts, simple digital editing will easily remove same from both still photos & videos. This photo would be amongst the easiest from which to eliminate the helicopter with a simple digital edit.

We had a chopper chasing the 844+4449 special in Seattle back in 2007. Really pissed off a bunch of people. Couldn't hear the locomotives work hard; only the blades of the chopper. I hope you were able to get away from the copter long enough to hear the sweet mallet music!
