Next month I will be riding these rails during my annual eight-day rail visit to Switzerland. At the moment the base tunnel underneith, that will be the world's longest rail tunnel, is about 3 to 4 years from completion. It is so neat. The rock that is pulled-out is mixed with cement, on sight, and reinstalled a tunnel liner. I understand the spectacular ride, as viewed in this photo, will still exist as a commuter line and maintained for heavy traffic in case of an emergency. This has been true for the Lotschberg base tunnel and it's corresponding over the top spectacular ride.
