Bernie... A nice perspective on a very unique way the Southern loaded the 2716! This photo proves the truth in one of their catch phrases, "Southern Gives a Green Light to Innovations." I've been enjoying ALL your recent Southern Railway submissions, but this one is especially interesting. Thanks for sharing your vintage images with us and please keep 'em coming!

I guess the NS did not acquire this item when the merger occurred, I never saw it on any of the later trips. Usually an ancient clamshell excavator was used to scoop the coal from a gon.

I have seen the coal loading machine several times during the Southern Railway Steam Program. If memory serves me correctly this was a product of the genius of Mr. Bill Purdie who was Road Forman of Engines, at the time. This piece of equipment was used several times when Southern 4501 was running trips in the Lexington, Kentucky area.
