UP 944 is not an E8, but an E9. The highest-numbered UP E8 was 942, (out of a class starting at 925,) but the identifying clue here is the lack of a nose-door headlight. All UP E8s had them, and the earlier E9s (1954-55, 943-962) did not. However, some of the later-built (1956-56,) and lowest-numbered (900-907,) E9s reverted to the second headlight, while the last-built (1961-63, 908-914,) dropped that option again. Less obvious in the photo is the rubber-mounted headlight glass, a charateristic ofall EMD 9-series cab units.

As to the Train ID, I've not been able to find what Number 5 was, but I do know what it wasn't... #105 was the Westbound City of Los Angles; #9 was the Westbound City of St. Louis; #103 was the Westbound City of San Francisco; #105 was the Westbound City of Portland. This could be the Westbound Portland Rose.

CORRECTION to my earlier post re: the possibility of being a "City" train. I just received an email from the UP Museum which reads, "No. 5 was the westbound mail train between Omaha and Los Angeles. It was not a "city" train. It carried mostly mail and express with a coach plus a diner or sleeper between some points. John Bromley, Union Pacific Railroad Museum" There we have it from a man who knows! Thanks, John!!

Thanks for the background on #5, a fairly exhaustive internet search of the possible train provided only the City train numbers at upload time.
