Nice view; it shows the black, oily texture of a busy steam servicing area. I can figure out most of what is shown except what are those pipes on the right doing?

Notice the sanding tower on the extreme right, and the other sanding tower just above 173 behind the coaling tower. I believe that the pipes in question supply dry sand to the towers but I'm not quite sure; could also be air pipes to supply pressure to force the sand out of the towers.
