The way the hopper is laying, and the look of the rail, I'd vote for a picked switch..

Well it doesn't look like they spilled much, if any at all. Still I bet that had to muck up someone's day. That jointed rail is looking a little rough, maybe time to do some intensive work.

CSX always has stood for the need of extensive work throughout their system. The only thing I don't get is that if the switch was picked then how come the engines miraculously made it and hoppers didn't?

I don't think it picked the switch, either. I shot one photo from the side, and it looks as if the second truck of the first hopper or the lead truck of the second hopper derailed. It would seem that something broke, either bolts in a fishplate or something in the switch points.

Judging by the track I would say the hopper jumped the rails.

Yea, I would agree it was the track. That particular track the engine is on looks about as stable as a barn in a tornado.
