That unit looks very similar to the units that CSX uses at the coal facility in Baltimore. I believe a scenic line also owns one, but the name escapes me right now. She'd be a good candidate to make it down to Roanoke and join the museum fleet!

Looks remarkably like an early ALCo HH (High Hood) series ( HH-660 etc) switcher. Appears the cab has been removed and the unit probably modified to be operated from the "phonebooth" on the front steps. I AGREE, this old unit SHOULD BE PRESERVED !

The VP8 Deskins Portal bean life in 1977 as Island Creek Coal Company's Virginia Pocahontas 5 operation. In 1994,when Consol took over, It cut together with the Virginia Pocahontas 6 mine to form Virginia Pocahontas 8.This is on Norfolk Southern's Big Prater Creek Branch at NS calls the yard up here Koenig. My aunt lives right beside this branch about a mile down below here. How did you get permission to come up to the switcher?
