The C&NW cars used on Amtrak's Quincy train were not commuter cars, but long distance cars built from the same carbody shell as the commuter cars. The 12 cars featured intercity class coach seating and among that equipment CNW bought for those "Penninsula 400" trains were two cars with coach and parlor seating. The CNW even rebuilt a former 400 Streamliner diner and a combine, adding fake, extended-height roofs, to match the gallery cars. Although the cars were HEP-powered, they were not operated as push-pull trains. Amtrak bought the long-haul Gallery cars, and eventually rebuilt two to cab cars, and eventually assigned the ex-CNW cars to the pair of ex-Pennsy Chicago-Valpariso commuter trains.

You would think without looking at the info, that this is a rare color shot of one of the C&NW's bilevel equipped 400 trains. This was long before my time, but maybe the BN was doing trackwork that required Amtrak to reroute?
