The engineer is sitting on the RIGHT side....the one opposite this view. That's what the "F" is for. If the unit is running in "reverse," the engineer would be on the left side---but he would have a short hood ahead of him, which wouldn't restrict his vision all that much going through right-hand curves (looking for signals).
