I had heard that the silver striping was an experiment to make the mostly black Rio Grande units more visible, especially at night.

Excellent scan, Frank. I read that 3154's silver frame and nose striping were for a Buick TV commercial.

Pure speculation but... filmed in 1997 and starring Dennis Quaid and Danny Glover, Switchback, was shot in Colorado. It is difficult to tell from the movie trailer, but the producers may have used a pair of Rio Grande GP 60s. Decent to very good winter mountain scenes with train during action sequences.

Yes this unit was used in a Buick commercial and no the units in the movie ar sd39s in Rio Grand paint.
