Casey - I Knew You'd Come Through For Me, Bravo, Bravo !!!
I could have done better!
even better picture in the nighttime sweet picture.
Fanatastic looking units NS. Nicely done. But as to most of the "official" photos....um, not so much. Way too much side angle on many of them, thereby not showing the nose emblems as much as should be. This was very bad on the CofG unit's shots. Also, watch your backgrounds and foregrounds a lot more. In several of them a few steps in either direction (changing the shot angle)would have eliminated clutter, corrected lighting issues, or cleaned-up rooflines, particularly noticeable on the night shots like this one (reflective stripe on unit behind the 8102; switchstand coming right out of the pilot). Just sayin'.....

So, now we wait for Don & Gene to show us their renditions of how these could & should be better. Even in the yards, everything is not perfectly controllable at all times and at all locations. Like the old saying goes, with a million monkeys & a million typewriters eventually you'll come up with an exact copy of the bible. So we'll wait, and eventually either Casey or one of you dudes might "Get It Right". In the meantime, I think Casey has done an excellent job here and with his many other efforts!

Casey is an Awesome photographer......it has shown ever since I got my first NS calender......his work on covering the Heritage Units is supurb and keeping me up to date. If you don't like it......track em' down and shoot em' yourself. Just won't be in Altoona.
Regardless of what others are saying, this is a great shot and a very nice looking locomotive.
Ohhh man...give me the access that Casey has and I'll SHOW you doubters how to take a proper roster shot.
And I DO plan to track em down and shoot em myself--they might not be quite so shiny, but I can assure you I'll get better results, even without the unlimited access.
These are OFFICIAL company photos--they should be PERFECT in every way. Not unevenly lit and with shop rags lying under the fuel tank, reflective stripes on another unit glowing and a switch stand sticking out of the plow. That's what the little screen on the back of a digital camera is for--you get instant feedback and you can take a Mulligan if you need to. Take 3 steps to the right, tweak the lighting, and you've got it. Simple.

Mark, it's not to say that you or any number of others couldn't or won't get a jewel somewhere along the road. That said, we'll all be waiting to see what you get !!!
Instead of bad mouthing the photos why don't you just be thankful that NS let Casey take photos of the new heritage units when they are in such pristine condition.
Don, I would be more than happy to show you my "renditions" of how I could / would get these official rosters shots done right if I had the same unlimited access that Casey does and had the assets at my disposal that he has, such as a cherry-picker to shoot off of. I don't, so you'll never know or get to see that. But as Mark so correctly pointed out, these are official Company photos by a Company phtographer, and as such, EVERYTHING is indeed COMPLETELY controllable to "get it right". It has nothing at all to do with being in a yard or shop area at all. If those locations are not "right", then move the unit out to one that is. Once again, as Mark said...simple. Like another famous 'ol saying says...."If you're going to do something, do it RIGHT".
My apolgies Don, I meant to address my comment in response to Bob's.
Christopher, NS isn't "letting" Casey take the photos--they're PAYING him to do it. He's the Company Photographer. It's his JOB and his responsibility to produce the best images possible for the company.
I think his action shooting is excellent and his posed shots of the Heritage units out on the road so far have been terrific. But the Builder's Photo type rosters--the ones you have more control over than any others, incidentally--have missed the mark.
To all of the naysayers, I could pick your shots apart and you could do the same to me. Instead of worrying about "perfect," let's remember - this is a hobby. It's supposed to be fun! Why can't we just be thankful for the fact that NS has provided us foamers the opportunity to see these paint jobs again? If you are so good, why don't you start your own web site and call it "Perfect Train Pictures?" I've been shooting since 1969 and still shoot slides, not 'perfect' producing digital. Call me stupid, old fashioned, or whatever, but I still get a kick out of being out on the mainline; or as a buddy says, "What a hobby!"
Seriously guys, can't you just enjoy this picture without tearing it up. NS and the photographer have put in a lot of hard time to even make this possible, so lets just give them appreciation for what they have done and produced here!
I love all the heritage units i really like this one its AWESOME!

Should have put the number at the front of the unit, forward of the battery box, it looks very out of place where it is.
Personally I think it's a beautiful shot. Of a beautiful loco.
Wow, you critics need to get a life - and a different website. NS didn't have to spend its thousands of dollars to commemorate these fallen flags....NS and Casey, thanks for your work.

You guys should be thankful of what Norfolk Southern is doing and putting these paint schemes back on the rails instead of criticizing them. My personal opinion, I believe this is a very great shot! If you believe you can do better you need to catch it when it comes to your own town! Now you guys need to just CHILL OUT! Thank you NS for doing this!

There is no offense taken. I mean, I could have done a better paint scheme for that PRR engine from my experience. Not how it was shot.
