In the middle 70's, I was cutting old ribbon steel that had been replaced on the pass. It was dusk in the mountains, and we had a heavy train coming. The head engines came around a bend on the steepest part of the grade, and were pouring sand on the new ribbon for traction, and sparks were flying off the new rail. A set of engines was pushing hard in the middle of the train so we got to see the sight again. Steel filings could be seen along side the new steel, already grinding rails. I often wonder how long rails lasted on that pass. The author is right, it was one of the greatest sights to see!

I remember that train! It was the C-SCMSWE0-10B. Thanks again for showing me around on Mullan, Jason.
