The difference between the as built from EMD options, chosen by the Southern Railway and the Norfolk and Western is easily seen here. The Southern Railway was always a leader when the safety of it's employees was concerned. The Southern Railway purchased the extra cost walkway lighting option on it's locomotives while the N & W did not. The short hood walkway light on the Southern unit is "burning bright for safety" at the left edge of Jonathon's wonderful photo.
