Those 5300's had turbocharged 12-cylinder engines - sort of like an SW1500 on steroids. Opening the doors behind the electrical cabinet you'd see nothing but air and have to look for the relatively-tiny engine. SP ordered these for heavy low speed service; looking at the arrangement of the units, unless the dispatcher was deploying a 1-unit helper on the nose it would appear this power was going all the way through.

As I posted elsewhere,the SD39 was bought with the idea of replacing the SD9,but that never happened.These engines were used on all kinds of SP trains and helpers.These engines were pretty heavy,they weighed in at about 417,000 lbs.
