Thats not a yard - those are mainlines going into London Waterloo (left) and London Victoria (right)!

Vernon - this is not a yard - Clapham Junction is one of the worlds busiest stations with an average of 2,500 passenger trains per day. For a view of the station yard see Photo #325163.

In 1988 Clapham was the scene of a serious rail accident when two trains collided due to wiring errors and a third later ran into the wreckage. 35 died and 100 were injured.

Actually "sirmartinfrobisher" it was the cutting to the south of the station on the line to Waterloo, and as you say it was caused buy a live rouge wire that hadn't been protected correctly in a line side signalling equipment box and thus provided a fails positive to give a green aspect. The rule book stated that a driver spotting a signal error should report it at the next signal or as soon as possible, what that train driver didn't know was that the fault was going to leave his stopped train totally unprotected, had he carried on to Waterloo or even stopped at Clapham Junction station and then reported the fault this accident would not have happened... http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/eventsummary.php?eventID=139

Thanks JerryE, a friend's wife was on the train, on her way to work in the City. She was a top earner and he got massive money but he may not have ben truly in love. He retired.
