'Shortest distance between two points is a straight line' - at least that's what I was taught in geometry class. Sure must be frustrating to build a railroad!

Mother Nature just does not build her scenery in straight lines. Railroad construction crews have to be dependent on what topography exists and plot the easiest grades possible. When existing, a water level route ( New York Central ) is desired. When all else fails, an underground route may be the last resort, as with the spiral tunnels in Canada and other places.
