With this much smoke, the power should shut down.

Back in those days, this was actually a very common occurrence. Those of us who fanned the hill often would count on these smokeshows to alert us of trains exiting the bore.

It just goes to show how quickly 3 or 4 big diesel engines working flat out will very quickly use up all the available oxygen from inside a tunnel! Ive often wondered just how much power they lose from air starvation? Alot i would think.
