This picture looks like it came from "Model railroading with John Allen". Love it.

"John Allen" would have done the caboose with either a "sag" from rods and queen posts that were too loose, or he would have given the car a "hump backed " look from having the rods and queen posts over tightened. John Allen was not only a great model railroader, he was also a great photographer with a wonderful eye for detail in both of his passions. Thank you for remembering John, he was one of the great ones !

My first thought is that this consist is amazingly similar to a push-pull commuter operation PRR ran in Southern New Jersey, at just about this same time, using a 4-axle Baldwin switcher and a single standard P-70 coach. There is at least one photo of this "train" in RPN, I just don't have the number at hand.

See Don Haskel's photo RPN #248179 for a SIMILAR consist in a TOTALLY DIFFERENT environment.

Very near my hometown. The old Cotton Belt was king in the bootheel of Missouri! Btw, I love the oval window VW Beetle in the background!

Would this "caboose" be of the drover coach with cupola variety?

I rode a loaded UP coal train into Lilbourn a couple times when I was 14 or 15. Hard to imagine that railroad ever needing this sort of service.

Two songs suddenly pop in the brain from out of nowhere, Riding on the Cotton Belt by Johnny Cash, and Cotton Belt by Lone Justice.
