Great detail photo Frank, and your remarks provoke even more thought. A read of the LB Foster rail products catalog provides additional insight as to what needs to be spec'd out when ordering compromise joints to ensure horizontal and vertical alignment on the gauge side, even rail head wear.

Notice the crack starting just below the A? Another reason for the elimination of these joints, maintenance is costly.
