Look at the coupler on the left side of the ore car, there is no knuckle. Why is this ?

That is a solid drawbar, the cars are semi-permanently coupled together. This is more often seen on intermodal cars because it reduces slack action and jarring.

The DM&IR assembled four cars into "mini-quad" sets to help reduce air leaks in the winter and improve train handling. There is a coupler on either end of each four-car set and drawbars between the others. The orange-painted posts on the ends of the cars represent couple ends.
