A great uncle of mine (long since passed) was on the head end RPO on the Crescent the night of the washout and the train stopped about 10 miles north of the washed out Tye River due to flooding shorting out the traction motors. The signals were never tripped to red because the welded rail stayed intact. Had the train continued the Crescent would have been a catastrophic victim of Hurricane Camille.
