Not sure if this is 1. Repair costs exceeding scrap metal value, or 2. Irreparable damage.

These aluminum gons don't cost very much to build (in comparison to other railcars). They're essentially a "disposable" car, as even the slightest derailment tends to crumple these things like a can. When they're fully loaded, you can actually see the car sides bending out slightly, so it doesn't take much to ruin one of these cars. It's generally easier just to scrap the car and purchase a new one, saving the trucks, couplers, and air brake equipment. I'm interested in the brand-new coupler installed on this. Must've been replaced only a few weeks before the accident.
