High Hoods were never "not an option" Southern ordered them until 1981. In 1974 the N&W ordered the 1625-1652 and 6073-6188 in the next years with the Bi-Directional stand turned straight on the long hood side but the Engineers soon objected to being on the left side when running short hood out because of not able to see the backing signals that were used at the time instead of radios when setting out and picking up. The only portable radio the crew got back then was the Lunchbox Radio to be used on the Cab.

Regardless of "low hood" or "high short hood" configuration, this is a great shot.

A great photo, but what makes a scene like this truly remarkable is to have actually experienced the ground shaking thunder an eastbound coal train generates as it begins the assault on the Allegheny summit at the Merrimac tunnel.
