Beautiful locomotives...I wish I had had the chance to see them.

How wonderful to see a sharp color photograph of these units performing their originally-intended duties. It's truly a shame that not even one of them was preserved, but at least we have a few photos to remember them by. Thank you for posting this.

What was the reason for the fluted side covers? Design? (Can't tell that they serve a ventilation purpose.)

I ran these junkers Denver-Pueblo 78 to 81.These thing were horrible.I could not believe any railroad would buy these things for passenger service.

Hey Gordon Vincent, it would be very interesting to know why those engines were so terrific to run!

These engines had a 16 notch throttle, you time the load up with a calendar.I never could get back into the engine room because of all the oil all over the place, you could not walk in there safely.Never had one that had a working dynamic brake.Could not adjust the seat, when you notched out with that foot and half length throttle,I had to stick my stomach in to move the throttle, and I was a 150 lbs. skinny kid back then.Engineers kept writing up all the defects, but Santa Feces says take it or else. These engines vibrated so bad,you had to hold the throttle at all times,or it will move by itself.36 years of engines service,I don't miss any GE built engine.Men tell me these new one's still vibrate bad.Nothing beats any EMD locomotive, any size,in any class of service.I think I covered all I can remember,I hope that answers your question.

Gordon, the new GE's today put any EMD to shame. The tables really turned in the last couple of decades.
