A hundred miles per hour - wow - how fast is the service today with modern diesels, computers, enhanced signaling and welded track? Gotta be at least .79 X's that speed, eh? Glad to see it was preserved. Thanks for sharing!

LOL! Yes, the K5a's would routinely hit 3-digit speeds on good track. The official Canadian record for steam though goes to a CP 4-4-4 at 112.5 mph. To be fair to VIA & Amtrak, there are some sections of track where 100mph is allowed in the Ontario/Quebec corridor but only for LRC cars with the banking system active, & there's Amtrak's Northeast Corridor with 150mph on some sections for the Acela & 125 for AEM7's. But these are exceptions & not the rule. Still, 79mph is faster than any highway speed limit. Speaking of 100mph behemoths, sure wish I could get a pic of a Milwaukee Road Baltic or a New York Central Hudson (94mph is close enough to 100 if you squint)...too bad they were all scrapped. Cheers, Pete.
