As an aside to this wonderful photo and description, I believe this is the line in which functioning semaphores exist to this day. I was south of here, in Las Vegas, NM, recently and was fortunate enough to catch them working as Amtrak passed. The dust storm with 50 mph winds and higher gusts only added to the excitement.
