Brian, you forgot to mention one other trick built into these locomotives, they had a motor-generator set, meaning that they could work over extended gaps in the 3rd rail and (for a limited period of time) within yards away from the 3rd rail or an overhead external power supply. Basically the locomotive had an electric motor that would "spin-up" a big, heavy, flywheel that would in turn a generator that supplied the traction and control power. Oh and just a note on build dates, 20001 & 2 were built -as you say- in 1941 but due to wartime restrictions, 20003 wasn't built/completed until 1948 and thus never ran in Southern Railway ownership.
