I remember a few years back, a MetroRail train (WMATA) did the same thing at the Franconia/Springfield end of the Blue line.

This will work fine for a while, until the tracks move further apart. When working for CP we had a news-print train pick a switch and travelled for nearly 3 miles in that condition, then went on the ground when the westbound track moved away further than the car could straddle between the 2 lines. Took us 3 days to clear it up.
