Looks to be in pretty sad shape. It certainly appears that the souvenir hunters have picked her clean too.

The engine's probably in much better shape then it appears. A photo of #1187 from 2004 can be seen here in a photo by Kevin Madore. Likely, all the appliances and instruments have long been removed and stored inside the shop. The rest, including the wood cab likely needed to be rebuilt from scratch - something the crew at Strasburg can easily accomplish.

Excellent mood/study shot Mitch. Thank you for this view. BTW, I am sure all her jewelry is safely in storage.
|
I doubt that at the Strasburg. More than likely the RR has taken off most of her important parts as well as the numberboards and headlight and stored them safely inside.
|
Awesome Pic Mitch!!! Rest assured all the "Bling" is in storage. Nothing has been picked over!

Rest assured that all of the vital components were removed by the railroad when she was evaluated a few years back. She's stripped down to the degree that she is in order to minimize deterioration in the weather. This engine did, in fact, haul some passenger trains on the Strasburg back in the 1960s. Unfortunately, she needed a diesel assist from a 44-tonner, because she just didn't have the muscle for the grades with a heavy load. It would be nice to see her restored cosmetically and displayed at the station. After all, she is vintage Strasburg power. Thanks for posting, Mitch! Glad to see this engine finally come out of the shadows.

I hope that when it is (rather then if) restored even cosmetically that they have inside display ares for locos like this. At first I thought it had been in a fire.! Does it look worse in colour?
|
Excellent, as usual, Mitch ... B&W, the perfect medium for this one, Nice!
|
That's good to know it's being looked after. I've never been happier to be wrong! Let's just hope it gets properly preserved.

Mitch wonderful tonal qualities of your image...the muted light from the sun, really added to this photo.
