That's a sad sight. All of these were in running condition when they were sold

They started their career in 1985, not so old for a loco.

Sad..... I photographed many of these SD50F's before they were retired.

24 that's no age for a loco, they should be many years of life left in them. We have also scraped locos that would have plenty of life left in them! Where any snapped up by preservation society's ? We owe a great deal to preservationists over here in the UK. Lucky to get access to the scrap yard nice image if a little sad.

Sid, I love your great rail photos from the Southeast. You seem to cover it all.

I know there is more older locos being made "surplus" by brand-new locos than are needed, but you'd think there'd be more of a market for remanufactured-new locomotives that are tier-whatever compliant. Rip out the old 16-645F, drop in a 12-710G (or whatever), a new electrical and computer system. Look at the quality of the MK remanufactured locos of the late 1980's and early 1990's (BN and SP, primarily) versus what they were getting from EMD and GE. These SD50F's already have safety cabs, though the wide hoods have pros and cons...

Northern Locomotives a long way from where they started life. It is sad to see that they aren't in service anymore.
