Sorry if this is a strange question, but why was so much of ALL's rolling stock so short, compared to its counterparts elsewhere in the Americas?

Kurt Wayne this railway stretch trains usually have three locomotives EMD SD40-2 or GE C30-7, or 2 GE BB40-2 (Dash 9) pulling 80 freight wagons. It is a narrow gauge railway (metric) the most common in Brazil.

Thank you, meloaraujo2010. It's just fascinating to see the freight cars so small next to these engines.
