I would say the operative word here is "GRITTY." By today's standards, its amazing how much oil used to be spilled on the ground in railroad and industrial operations.

Excellent capture! It's obvious there was a mudslide of sorts here, with the mainline yet to be re-tamped and the temporary, bulldozed drainage ditch hopefully enough to keep things under control should the storm in the background be moving in. The train is most likely under a significant slow order.

The Clinchfield was always associated with "heavy haulin'" and this photo show the down and dirty side of transporting freight in Kentucky. Nice capture, David!
