Amazing. Usually, it's the surrounding scenery that puts a railfan in his or her place - not so with UP's "Big Blows". I like the tight crop - it endorses the concept that one would have to step back to fully appreciate just how large and impressive these engines were (are)!

Was the noise so loud that ear protection for the crew was required back in '66 before OSHA? I assume the sound was a very high pitched loud scream and I can't imagine OSHA not requiring noise protection if in use today.

I experienced a Turbine in 1966 in Evanston, Wyoming, at age 13. Didn't know what it was at he time, but remember my Father commenting that it sounded like a Jet accelerating as it left the Evanston depot headed towards Ogden, Utah
