Wow! That is sweet! Can't believe it's going back into service! That fresh Southern paint is absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing. Glad to see it's still set up for the traditional Southern LHF operation. Now this is a TRUE heritage unit! Way to go NS. You guys are constantly impressing us lately. More please!
WOW! NS continues to stun and surprise me! Never thought I'd see a Tuxedo High Hood in revenue service again! I can't express my gratitude in words Norfolk Southern! Thank you!
Here she comes, Carolinas!
OMG! Great Job NS!! Is it true that your gonna do this to the first N&W SD40 TOO!?!?!?
I. am. just. speechless...
This is just too cool! Great work Norfolk Southern!
Very nice NS. Great to see an old SD40 get a new lease on life....this is a TRUE heritage unit.
Can't wait to see this passing the tower at the south end of where Terminal Station used to be in downtown ATL. I'll have to shoot it with the SOU office building too!
More angles!
Back in 1994 when the steam program ended, I vowed to hate NS for the rest of my life.....I can't fulfill that vow as NS is once again my favorite railroad. Thank you NS for honoring your heritage.
NS shows again that it is a class act.
Be a pity to get it dirty. Always loved this paint scheme in Southern colors.

As usual NS is a class act operation !!!
Absolutely gorgeous! I sure got blind-sided by this surprise. Looks as good as new, but with NS's work it's probably better than new. Glad I'm in the Piedmont area - now if i could just get that new Canon to shoot it with!
Norfolk Southern is truly a first class outfit - THANK YOU!
I love it! NS deserves a big Thank You for green lighting the project, but look at the quality of the work the Juniata and Debutts workers turn out. Beautiful! And, this also comes just in time to coincide with the release of Athearn's upgraded HO scale SD40's. I know you guys are seeing this...hint, hint!
Leaving the high-hood? Clllassy.
You can't beat that! Well done!
What a beauty!
The endless show of class and pride continues. Thanks for all that you have done and continue to do, NS.
Outstanding, very cool, many kudos to NS for doing this. However I have to express a nit. Well more than a nit actually. Is proper gold leaf paint no longer manufactured? None of the Southern Rwy re-paints I've seen use the gold striping and lettering, all appear to have the yellow. This includes the E-8s in Crescent Green at several museums. I know SR started using dulux (sic?) gold in late re-paints so technically this SD-40 could be correct. Not the case on the E-8s though. It just baffles me how something so obvious is ignored. But again, a HUGE thanks to NS for preserving this unit and the re-paint.
There's a true NS SR -SOUTHERN Railway Heritage Unit as it should be and done correctly ! And Thank you for posting.
Simply stunning! This is how you honor your roots,
Ahhhh what a beauty! Only missing the class lights to be perfect! Way to go NS!

Stunning job Norfolk Southern!
NS....you deserve a cookie! I can't wait to shoot this working locals up my neck of the woods! Thanks for all that you have done and what is to come!
Well now my question on the other photo seems stupid based on the view of this angle. Oh well. I might be stupid but this is still one beautiful diesel and Norfolk Southern is leading the way on honoring its heritage. Way to go NS!
I love it! Keep it coming NS!!!!
: )
Gosh!! Since everyone else as left a comment on this gleaming, handsome locomotive, I will have to say how much it reminds me of part of my teenage years along the busy SR mainline through Culpeper, VA. The long tangents and the sweeping curve and station in town-- nice teenage memories!
