Those ends are for safety when car inspectors are inspecting those types of cars and inspecting welds and making sure that the cars in the train are road,rail safe and more safe footing for the people who do maintenance work on those cars. Safe footing in the railroad industry is of paramount concern when working on the railroad. Remember the ssssss, safety ,slippery,slack action ,slick,stumble ,snow,sorry sonny.
