Actually, they did a pretty fair job of "rebranding" the equipment as DL&W; I for one enjoyed seeing it, rather than the hodge-podge of various railroads' equipment with no historic ties to Scranton or the Pocono mainline.

The owner of an engine has the right to paint/number it however they please. It is not a Lackawanna heavy Hudson, they're gone. But to capture the spirit of it, even if it draws jeers, is worth the effort. If the complaints made people come and look, so be it.

I am not knocking the credible job that the Steamtown crews did with the DL&W recreations. I am pointing out that the rebranding was a result of the economic hardships that faced Steamtown, and I don’t think that it resonated with the target market, which was tourists that wouldn't know DL&W from D&H. Ultimately, it took the resources of the National Park Service to reverse Steamtown’s fortunes.
