Not entirely true about all manned helper operations being in the east. There is still a manned helper pool out of San Luis Obispo, CA that regularly goes out and assists trains across Cuesta Pass. Most commonly they're helping the southbound loaded "oil cans" make their way towards the Los Angeles area. Usual power for them is a pair of SD60Ms.

If you go back to the late '70s and beyond, there used to be a dozen or more loaded coal trains going south each day down the KD. Each shift at Chaska would push about four trains.
