This is an example of 'a face only mother could love'! UP designers were sure able to think outside of the box. Thanks for sharing this unique looking locomotive.

UP designers? How about GE designers. Unless I missed something, I'm pretty sure GE designed and built this locomotive.

Imposing! I don't think the 3,000 hp single unit was what killed off the idea of "double diesels," it was the "one goes down, you lose two" factor you mentioned that did them in. The 3,000 hp single unit offerings were available in 1966 (SD40), and in fact 3,600 hp single units were available by December of 1965 (SD45), while production of successor U50Cs (similar but with six axle trucks instead of the four 4-axle trucks) continued until 1971, 5-6 years later.
