Sad to see a sight such as this - even though it's an interesting photo Matt. Question - and I hope this has a negative response - were there any locomotives present with this find? If not - that would make me feel a little less "saddened" by this scene, but if so - what a shame and a loss of good, should have been used for a tourist line, locomotives - hopefully not steam.

From the condition, I'd say that the cars were stuck in a pair of sidings and just left. Then a fire or something came through and burned the wood of the cars, leaving them in this condition.
